Leadership Elk & Cameron Completes Session on Arts and Education Day

The Community Education Center’s Leadership Elk & Cameron’s (LEC) monthly session in December focused on arts and education. The participants started their morning with Dr. Ramsey at the St. Marys High School followed by a tour of their vocational and Dutch Manufacturing programs. One participant stated “You don’t realize how much goes into
the education system and how things are changing daily.”

The class then traveled to Calypso and Company to learn about their co-op of local artisans and take a tour of their building to learn about their future expansion projects. The CEC hosted the class for the afternoon with a lunch sponsored by Northern PA Regional College. The participants learned about the many education opportunities available in the CEC building, which includes Dickinson’s Parents as Teachers Programs, CEC Programs, NPRC and adult GED. Local artist Janet Van Eerden provided an art experience for the class to teach them the importance of taking time to destress and relax. She also shared information regarding the Arts in Education program. The day ended with a visit to the Elk County Footlighter’s stage, where they learned about the many opportunities available locally in theatre arts. One participant reflected “going through the daily grind of work and home, it is easy to disconnect and not stay current on the activities involving the arts in the community.” These experiences showcased that the “arts are alive in Elk County”.

The goals of Leadership Elk & Cameron are to increase community awareness and understanding, provide opportunities for collaborative leadership and relationship building, and to foster and promote civic readiness. More information about the Leadership program can be found at http://www.communityedcenter.com, or by contacting the CEC at (814) 781-3437.
