CEC Makerspace Issues Call for Local Talent to Spark Innovation
ST. MARY
S – The CEC Makerspace is officially scouting for community members with a passion for “doing” to help inspire the next generation of creators. Whether you are a retired tradesman, a weekend hobbyist, or a digital native, the CEC Makerspace wants your expertise.

But what is a Makerspace you ask? A Makerspace is a collaborative workspace where people of all ages and backgrounds gather to create, invent and learn using a variety of “no-tech to high tech tools”, according to Google. Makerspaces are increasingly vital for developing 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. They provide equitable access to expensive equipment, allowing anyone in the community to transform a creative idea into a tangible object/product.

CEC Makerspace staff emphasize that professional teaching credentials are not required. “If you have experience and a passion for helping others learn, there is a place for you here and we’d love to have you!” says Sam Mitchell, CEC Makerspace Manager.

A Wealth of Opportunities
The Makerspace is looking for flexible commitments tailored to individual schedules. Residents can get involved through:

Leading hands-on workshops.
Mentoring others on specific goals.
Volunteering with ongoing projects.
Demonstrating a specialized craft.
From High-Touch to High-Tech
The search covers a vast array of disciplines. While the following list is not exhaustive, the CEC is currently seeking individuals skilled in:

Craft & Creation: Sewing, Woodworking, Jewelry Making, and Cricut Creations.
Culinary Arts: Cooking, Baking, and Cake Decorating.
Traditional Trades: Welding, Metalworking, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing, and Construction/Building.
The Digital Arts: 3D Printing, Laser Engraving, Podcasting, Coding, Graphic Design, and Robotics.
Business & Tech: MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint), QuickBooks, Apple products and Google.
Other: If you have a skill not listed, we want to hear from you!
How to Join the Movement
Those ready to share their skills or learn more about the Makerspace are encouraged to reach out. “This is just the beginning! The future is bright and we are excited to see what the future holds for our CEC Makerspaces,” said Sam Mitchell.
