Leadership Elk & Cameron Explores Economic Development, Environment, & Tourism

Leadership Elk Cameron (LEC) started their Economic Development, Environment, & Tourism Day by touring Domtar Paper Mill in Johnsonburg. It was amazing to learn not only about their operations, but how they practice sustainability and give back to the community. The tour included a stop at their fish hatchery! The group then visited the Elk County Community Recycle Center, where Bekki Titchner, Recycling Coordinator, provided a tour and valuable insights into the recycling process and the wide range of materials that the center accepts. They accept donations of many more materials than anyone would’ve imagined! The center also operates on income from their donations and even has a drive-through drop off. Every donation counts!

Straub Brewery was next in the lineup, where the group toured the gravity fed brewery, which is one of the oldest family-owned and operated breweries in the US. Lunch was enjoyed by all at the Brewery, which was sponsored by The Stackpole Hall Foundation. The afternoon wrapped up talking about tourism activities in Elk and Cameron Counties and a presentation from Eric Wolfe, President and Founder of MEEA and President of Horizon Technologies. Eric highlighted local opportunities for economic development and the strengths of our manufacturing sector.

The goals of Leadership Elk & Cameron are to increase community awareness and understanding, provide opportunities for collaborative leadership and relationship building, and to foster and promote civic readiness. Early bird applications are currently being accepted through May 31st with a discounted program cost.
