Leadership Elk & Cameron Explores Local Government
The Community Education Center’s Leadership Elk & Cameron (LEC) explored Local Government this month with the help of many community leaders. Attorney Tom Wagner, former Solicitor for Elk County and the City of St. Marys, provided an overview of the functions of County government. City Manager Joe Fleming led the class through a mock City Council meeting at City Hall. Lunch was provided and sponsored by Keystone Corner Lunch.
Participants then travelled to the Courthouse in Ridgway where District Court Administrator, LeeAnn Covac, and Judge McMahon discussed jury duty and the court system. Lee Neureiter, Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds, and Clerk of Orphans Court, organized assignments for participants to visit various County departments looking for specific information such as marriage certificates, Veteran’s benefits, and tax claims. Following that activity, Commissioners Lecker, Quesenberry and Gebauer spoke to the class about County responsibilities. Kim Frey, Director of Elections provided a presentation on filing petitions to run for elected office.
The session ended with participants going to the 911 Center for a presentation and tour with Mike McAllister, Director of the Office of Emergency Services. Christine Perneski, Director of Enterprise Development provided an overview of North Central Regional Planning.
The goals of Leadership Elk & Cameron are to increase community awareness and understanding, provide opportunities for collaborative leadership and relationship building, and to foster and promote civic readiness.
