RHS Students Exploring Local Careers
Ridgway High School 10th grade students spent the day exploring careers throughout Ridgway. Ms. Schaut’s career class begin their exploration in the classroom with Amy and Kaitlyn Goode from the CEC DISCOVER Partnership as they learned about local resources and what jobs and education are available locally. Students learned the future trends in employment and what type of jobs are growing as they plan for life after high school. The career cruises are the next steps to helping students get a glimpse of the local job opportunities and employer expectations within our area. In the morning, students got to tour and meet with local employers from Clarion Sintered Metals, Advantage Sales & Supply, and Dickinson Center. The afternoon finished with a tour of the Elk County Courthouse led by Lee Neureiter. At the Courthouse, the students were introduced to many public service offices and careers that ranged from the Sheriff’s Office, Children and Youth Services, the District Attorney’s Office, the Probation Office, the 911 Center, and the Elk County Jail.
Companies highlighted jobs with various education requirements, but many focused with “on the job” training opportunities available right out of high school. “Finding a career you enjoy” was one statement heard throughout the day. Students were encouraged to have a starter job in high school to gain experience and some of the companies even encouraged students to return to job shadow or to fill out an application to work there while in high school. This event was coordinated by the Community Education Center’s (CEC) DISCOVER Partnership. Lunch was provided and sponsored by Advantage Sales and Supply. Local companies interested in hosting students for future programs are encouraged to contact Amy Goode at (814) 781-3437 or amy@communityedcenter.com.
