The Community Education Center’s Leadership Elk and Cameron program’s (LEC) monthly session focused on local government in February. The day started at the CEC with a presentation by Attorney Rick Brown discussing how the local government affects our daily lives. The participants then walked to City Hall where they met with Mayor Lyle Garner and City Manager Joe Fleming to create a mock city council meeting discussing important city issues. Lunch was sponsored by Keystone Corner Lunch. After lunch, the group traveled to St Marys Sewer Authority and the St Marys Water Authority. Both locations gave a great presentation and tour of the facilities. One participant noted that they learned “just how much local government impacts my daily life from the time I wake up!”
The last part of the day was spent at the Elk County Courthouse navigating the various offices and services available. The participants went on a scavenger hunt finding different offices they were assigned to visit and complete tasks. The offices that participated included the Commissioner’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office, Tax Claim Bureau, the Treasurer’s Office, and the Elections Office. Another participant shared “All of the different offices with the county and what they do really opened my eyes. I didn’t know some of the offices existed.” The class then got a tour of the Elk County Jail intake area by Warden Scott Atwell where they learned about the booking process and some resources available to inmates in the jail and upon release.
